GST Council cuts Higher Tax on Consumption Goods: Only 50 Items remain in 28% List

The 23rd meeting of the GST Council, on Friday removed certain consumption goods from higher tax of 28 per cent. Resultantly, only 50 items remained in the list of goods which attract 28 per cent. Earlier, 227 items were there in the 28 per cent slab.

Goods like chocolates, chewing gum, shampoo, deodorant, shoe polish, detergents, nutrition drinks, marble and cosmetics will not attract higher rate of tax now. However, goods such as paints, cement and luxury goods like washing machine and air conditioners have been retained at 28 per cent.

“So, today the GST Council took a historic decision, that in the 28% slab there will be only 50 items and the remaining items have been brought down to 18%,” Bihar Finance Minister Sushil Modi said.

  1. How Cement and paint is deemed as luxurious goods?? Also, in 21st century how can you describe washing machine and air conditioning as a luxury. It's necessity goods
