Examination Tips By Chairman, Board of Studies ICAI

Examination Tips By Chairman, Board of Studies ICAI

.
As of now, you should be in full swing in your preparation for the May examinations. You need to prepare for the examinations with full seriousness and earnestness to achieve success. Our examination is generally perceived to be difficult. I do agree that, CA examination is not easy, but do not make it difficult without adequate preparation.
This is not only the case with the examination, but is true with all significant issues in life. Set your goals, plan, work hard and conquer. Success has no reservations, it is for those who dream of it and work for it. There is no substitute for hard work. In the words of Mahatma Gandhi “The future depends on what we do in the present”.
.
PLANNING IS THE CORNER STONE FOR SUCCESS
A good plan implies a good beginning. A goal without a plan is just a wish. Translate your wish into an actionable plan to succeed. There is no mantra for success devoid of smart work. It is imperative to plan your studies focusing on your examination. You are required to ensure systematic study to qualify the so called difficult examination. Planning should cover your timing, hours of study, topics to be covered, strategy for retrieval and finally how to make an impressive presentation in your answer book. I’m reminded of the words of Benjamin Franklin “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”. Instead you should plan to win. It is better late than never.
.
STRATEGIC STUDIES
Strategy for your studies is equally important considering the voluminous syllabus. Your approach to study can make a difference. One should be conscious of the following three things;
(I) WHAT TO STUDY
The syllabus and weightage of marks, trend in past question papers and study material will give an overall idea about what to study.
(II) HOW TO STUDY
It is advisable to allocate your available time into  3 buckets, first revision covering 50% of your study time, second revision should target in 30% of the time and the third and final covering the balance 20% time.
During your 1st revision, you should complete the reading of your study material cover to cover. While doing so, please do highlight the important contents of each chapter. When youtake a non-theory paper, you should carefully understand the concepts and based on that solve all illustrations. During your 2nd revision you should be able to prepare your study notes out of the segregated contents. One should complete all problems in the practice manual without referring the solution, in the case of subjects other than theory. Please identify only those problems where you got stuck for your final revision. Don’t waste your time on a problem which you could solve at the first instance. The final round should help you to reproduce your understanding on any topic you have been examined.
.
STUDY FROM STUDY MATERIAL
The cardinal principle for success in CA exam is to study from study material and is imperative. That is why the Institute provides you with quality material. Don’t get carried away with private coaching notes which necessarily need not cover the whole of the study material.
I was a member of the examination committee for two years and I can assure all of my friends in the students’ fraternity that you will not find a question for which the answer is not covered in your study material. You may study beyond study material for a wider understanding.
Unless you practice intensely you may not gain the required speed and expertise to face the examination confidently especially in the case of non-theory papers. The Board of Studies gives you exclusive practice manual for all subjects. If you are able to solve all problems in the practice manual and past 10 years question papers, without the aid of answer key, your success in exam is certain.
.
BOARD OF STUDIES INITIATIVES FOR STUDENTS
BOS cloud campus at the ICAI website is a reservoir of information whether it be study material, practice manual, revision test papers, suggested answers, audio- video lectures, analysis of the comments of the examiners on the past exams so on and so forth, the online e-resources are innumerable. You can log in with your student registration number (WRO/ SRO etc.). Please don’t miss it. This Learning Management System has a comprehensive coverage and also exercises and instant evaluation. Subject wise CDs are also available  for those who do not have online access, for a nominal fee per subject.
Before the crucial test, undergo few exams at your home. Set your questions, answer it under exam conditions, do a selfevaluation and find out where you stand. One of the major deficiencies among today’s students is that, they lack writing skills and even the patience for sitting through under exam conditions for 3 hours. Command over English language is lacking. You may be aware that, the Board of Studies regularly organises mock test before the examinations, at almost every branch of the Institute. It is a matter of great concern that only a handful of students utilise this facility to assess them of the preparedness. I strongly recommend all of you to make use of this golden opportunity.
.
III HOW TO WRITE THE EXAMINATION
ART OF WRITING EXAMINATION
It is of paramount importance how you write the examination or how you present your answers. Always keep in mind, what you are expected to study in 18 months is going to be examined in 3 hours and will be evaluated in less than an hour.
“I would advise you to read the questions carefully, understand the requirements of the questions and the issues involved before answering. You should answer to the question with clarity and what is relevant rather than what you presume.
As in the case of first impression is the best impression, your first answer should be the best answer. Don’t be under the false impression that one need to stick to the serial order of the question paper, but don’t forget to indicate the serial number legibly. Your introduction and conclusion to any answer should contain the crux of the question in an impressive and effective manner. Every point can start with a paragraph and may even highlight if you want to draw the specific attention of the examiner.
Refer relevant case laws, legal provisions of the concerned legislations and Accounting/ Auditing Standards provided you are sure of. Don’t forget to give working notes wherever necessary instead of venturing out to direct answer.
.
FACE THE EXAM WITH CALM
Be at the exam venue at least 15 minutes before the start. Only a calm mind can comprehend, recapitulate and reproduce. While writing exam peace of mind is paramount. Effectively utilize the pre-start 15 minutes to plan meticulously. Allocate available time to each question leaving a cushion of at least 20 minutes to face any contingency. At the end quickly review your answers, take stock of the situation and do what is best possible in the remaining time. Do not leave any question unanswered entirely unless and until you have no clue. Similarly, do not answer any question when you are blank, giving an opportunity to the examiner to assess the depth of your ignorance.
.
ENJOY THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING
“If you think you can – you can! If you think you cannot – you cannot! and either way…you are right”- Shiv Khera. If you don’t believe in yourself who else will? Your success in exam depends on your decision and determination to succeed. Be positive and it can do wonders in all your endeavours. Your hard work combined with positive thinking will lead to success.
Till last minute of the last examination, it is all in your control. You should not leave hope even if your performance at some stage was not at your expected level. Some of the students, during the examination, fear for the worst and make more mistakes. If you possess the spirit of positive thinking, nothing can stop you from achieving your goal. With sincerity, enthusiasm, determination, dedication, consistent performance and hard work, any student can become a Chartered Accountant.
Follow the advice of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam “To succeed in your mission, you must have single minded devotion to your goal”. I firmly believe that, if you are able to follow what is written above, you will come out in flying colours in your exams. All the very best, success is yours.

How to prepare CA IPCC & Final in 50 days

How to prepare CA IPCC & Final in 50 days

.
So lot of people ask me how to clear CA Exams in 2 months and I am writing this article to give some sort of Planning and scheduling to Pass there exams, In my recent seminar in Delhi on 14th February, I focused on the same thing, i.e to How to prepare CA IPCC & Final in 50 days. and students appreciated that part.
So we have 50 days to prepare CA IPCC now, If you want to clear the Exams confidently then you have to revise at least 2 Times in these 50 Days.
So 50 days are quite less if think psychologically, but at the same time these 50 days are quite enough if you plan it Wisely.

Now what you have to do is just divide a day into 3 session, so now you have 50 * 3 = 150 sessions.
Now if you take Group 1 only you have 150/4 = 37 session for 1 subject. 37 SESSION for two revision is quite enough. And yes you can make 1 session of 3 or 4 hours as per your capability
.
Now what you have is 37 sessions for 1 subject. Let’s  go deeper now :
Subject Revision 1Revision 2
Paper 12413
Paper 22413
Paper 32413
Paper 42413
Total9652

So we have utilized 96+52 = 148 session = 50 days to revise our syllabus

Revision 1 : 24 session for each subject

Take 2 subjects at one time in your first revision so you have now 48 session and that is 18 days to cover two subject.
Plan it like this : Take 1 theory and 1 Practice subject to make best possible out come
 Day 1Day 2Day 3Day 4Day 5Day 6Day 7Day 8Day 9Day 10Day 11
Session 1TheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryRevise what you have done in 5 daysPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryRevise what you have done in 7-10 days
Session 2TheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheory
Session 3PracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryPracticalTheoryPractical

and so on this will help you to revise one more time inside your revision In this way you will able to complete 1 revision easily for all 4 exams in just 32 days .

Revision 2 : 13 session for each Subject

In this duration pick 1 subject at once n make sure you will complete whole syllabus in 4 days (12 SESSION) . Now the 1 session is left with you is to judge yourself in exam like conditions. Make exam like conditions and attempt a mock test paper without seeing answers in this way you will able yo completely examine yourself, where you stand actually.

In this way you will complete 2 revisions in 50 days, trust me if you are able to complete this than no one can stop you from passing your exams. Hope you all will follow this. If you have any queries or suggestions just comment below. Or you can connect with me on facebook as well

HOW TO ANSWER THEORY QUESTIONS IN CA EXAMS ?

HOW TO ANSWER THEORY QUESTIONS IN CA EXAMS ?

.
Dear friends all of us has to face theory papers at every stage of CA Exams except for multiple choice question during common proficiency test . It was generally seen that more than 80 % of CA students feel uncomfortable in writing answer sheet during theory papers such as information technology & strategic management at CA IPCC level and Information system control Audit at CA Final Level. Although Audit & Assurance and Law paper comes under the category of theory papers to some extent. So I am gonna tell you the methods of writing answers for this type of papers and how to get more marks by writing less in exams.
.
HOW TO ANSWER THEORY QUESTIONS IN CA EXAMS ?
FIRST STEP
Read the question atleast 2 times before thinking or writing its answer. This activity will help you answering more correct and to the point answer for the question asked by the examiner.
Determine what kind of question has been asked by the examiner. Whether its answer is in “YES” or “NO” or examiner is asking just definition or direct answer just like B.Com exams.
SECOND STEP
If you have already determined the type of question as prescribed in step one now the time has come to write the answer. If question requires answer in yes or no .i.e question asked that whether particular act done by anyone is allowed or not etc. then you have to write the very first word of your answer as YES or NO in large font.
Proper care should be given to the point that write YES or No only when you are 100% sure about the answer. If you are sure then by just writing YES or NO as very first word of your answer you will get 30 % of the marks of your question.
THIRD STEP
Facts of the case: – In the second step you had already answered the question as YES or NO. Now the turn come of giving answer in detail.
At this step you have to write the facts of the case as written in the question. This is the simplest step of the question as you don’t need to run your mind to find anything. Everything is available for you in question paper free of efforts. For candidates who are not 100% sure about the answer this was your first step for writing answer.
FOURTH & FINAL STEP
This step is going to end your answer. In this step you have to give your opinion about the answer.
If you are 100% sure about the answer then clearly write that in my opinion …….(this was my answer) but if you not confident regarding the answer then you have to play game with the examiner. You have to write in such a way that examiner will know that even if your answer is wrong but atleast you have some sort of knowledge regarding the concept of the question.
So if you don’t know the answer then write the full concept/section regarding the question and at the end of your paragraph write that according to above mentioned law/concept this is the answer.
.
Some other general tips for writing answer in exams
FIRST – Always try to write in points rather than writing newspaper type answers in exams.
SECOND – Be specific. Don’t try to extend the length of your answer. In any case your answer should not reach to second page of the answer sheet.
THIRD – Always start answering question on new page. Each answer of the question paper should be on new page.
FOURTH – Try GEL PEN instead of using Ball Pen .
FIFTH – Don’t try to make fool of examiner. If you don’t have even 1% of knowledge regarding the answer then skip that question instead of writing wrong answer. If you writing purposely wrong answer only to fill sheets then you are irritating examiner and this will not help you in getting good marks.
SIXTH – Start your paper with the question on which you have 100% command. If your first three four question are right then you have more chances to get good marks even if you have not performed well in rest of the paper. First 3-4 sheets of your answer sheet should not include any cutting or page skip etc.
.
All the above tips are on the basis of my personal experiences and opinion of other persons can be different from mine. If you have any feedback or query regarding this article you can write in comments section below.

PROCRASTINATION V/S PREPARATIONS IN CA EXAMS

PROCRASTINATION V/S PREPARATIONS IN CA EXAMS

.
Hope u guys have already started your exam preparations…. Today we are going to deal with a very serious problem faced by all of us i.e Procrastination… Many of us face this problem but most of us are unaware about it…
Procrastination in simple words is doing unnecessary things and postponing the important tasks….
For example;
a) While studying you think of taking a 5 minute facebook break and end up taking a 60 minutes so called fb break..
b) Staying up all night and studying just before exam…
c) while studying you dream that i’m going to be very rich…or life after clearing CA….tongue emoticon owning posh cars etc etc…. (lol)
If these things have ever happened to you then this article is for you to understand why this happens and how to deal with this problem…
.
Lets see how wikipedia has defined the term procrastination, Procrastination is the practice of carrying out the less urgent tasks in preference to more urgent ones, or doing more pleasurable ones, and thus putting off impending tasks to a later time, sometimes to the “last minute” before deadline….
To be very clear procrastination is not a disease. It is an argument that goes on in your head. One part of your brain wants to study/ work whereas the other part wants to play angry birds/ candy crush. The former part is also known as prefrontal cortex, it is an upper part of your brain which wants to work. The later part is known as limbic system which is like a monkey in your brain taking decisions of doing unimportant tasks. It says, oh! i’ll do it later there is enough time..
Why do we procrastinate?
1) Not knowing where to start.. (kya karu law pehle padhu ya fir income tax)
2) Dreading the displeasure of doing the tasks (SM is so boring waise bhi nind aa jayegi)
3) Fear of failure (this happens when your performance is evaluated)
Tips to overcome procrastination:
1) Metacognition: Thinking about thinking. Everybody procrastinates in a different way. You should identify your thought patterns.
2) Plan goals: Be clear on what exactly you want to do.
3) Plan time: keep deadlines & allocate time for every task.
4) Break projects down into small tasks that are almost insultingly small.
5) Dont expect perfection: It takes a lot of time to be a perfectionist.
6) Plan how you are going to deal with the distractions.
.
Ask yourself “do i really need a 5 minute fb break?” If you dont need it right now then continue doing your task. I hope this was helpful. ” Dont wait, the time will never be just right”.
All the best.
Study hard. Best wishes,
.

.
There is a race from Point A to Point B between Mr. X & Mr. Y.
A______________________________________________________________ B
Mr. X has maintained the CONSISTANT SPEED of 200 KMPH from the beginning.
While Mr. Y has maintained the CONSISTANT SPEED of 350 KMPH from the beginning.
There is sufficient fuel in both the vehicles.
The chances of accidents are NEGLIGIBLE.
What do you think WHO WILL WIN?
Mr. Y?
The Correct Answer is Mr. X.
Even though the speed maintained by Mr. Y is higher, still he lose the race.
Now the question arise in our mind How Mr. Y lost the race & how could Mr. X managed to win even if his speed was low.
.
The answer is the race was from Point A to Point B.
However Mr. Y MISUNDERSTOOD that the race is from Point A to Point C.
Point C________________________________________________________Point A
